Calculate Shopify Fees: The Main Costs of your Shopify Store
Shopify is one of the top ecommerce platforms we recommend using for all of our clients. It’s packed with all the tools you need to run a successful store, from built-in SEO and marketing features to a world-leading checkout, gift cards, order, and inventory management tools and more.
You can use Shopify to create an omnichannel international store, selling in multiple currencies across different platforms. You can even sell in-person using Shopify POS.
However, before you launch your Shopify store, you’ll need a good idea of the monthly fee, transaction costs, and other expenses you’ll need to consider.
Here are some of the core factors ecommerce business owners need to think about.
Shopify Costs: The Shopify Plans
The first and most obvious thing to look at when calculating Shopify fees, is the price of your Shopify plan. There are various different Shopify pricing plans to explore, each with their own specific Shopify fees for things like payment and transaction processing.
Notably, you can choose to avoid different payment methods (outside of Shopify Payments) to keep your monthly fee low. Plus, if you choose to pay for an annual plan, you’ll get a discount.
Options include:
- Starter: $5 per month (5% transaction fees): This basic plan allows you to sell through Shopify via messenger apps, social media, or an existing website. It comes with support for unlimited products, but you won’t be able to build a Shopify store.
- Basic Shopify: $39 per month (monthly), or $29 per month (paid annually), plus 2.9% plus 30 cents transaction fees. This plan includes all of the core features of Shopify, including store building tools, unlimited products, multiple sales channels, and an SSL certificate. You also get abandoned cart recovery tools.
- Shopify: $105 per month (monthly) or $79 per month (paid annually), plus 2.6% and 30 cents credit card fees. This plan includes all the components of the Basic plan, 5 staff accounts, professional reports, and gift cards.
- Advanced Shopify: $399 per month (monthly), or $299 per month (paid annually), as well as 2.4% plus 30 cents payment gateway fees. This plan includes the features of Shopify, enhanced customer service, priority shipping, custom reports, and 15 staff accounts.
- Shopify Plus: Prices starting at $2000 USD, with 2.15% transaction fees. This plan comes with all the features of Advanced Shopify plus more Shopify shipping discounts, advanced API tools, customization, premium customer service, and more.
The more you pay for your monthly plan with Shopify, the lower your transaction fees, and payment processing fees (using tools like PayPal or Square) will be. Additionally, higher plans come with bigger Shopify shipping discount options.
Additional Shopify Fees: Payments, Transactions and Other Costs
Using our Shopify pricing calculator you’ll be able to understand not just the costs you’ll pay for your monthly Shopify fee, but other external costs too.
Every Shopify plan comes with payment fees, if you’re using Shopify Payments. Notably, Shopify Payments are only available in certain countries, so you’ll need to check they’re available for you before you get started.
If you choose a third-party payment gateway such as PayPal for your Shopify plan, then you’ll need to pay additional payment gateway fees.
On top of this, there may be some additional costs for ecommerce business owners to consider, such as the price of paying for integrations.
Shopify Payment Fees
The built-in Shopify Payments service on Shopify allows you to process transactions with discount codes, and various payment methods without additional transaction fees.
However, there are still payment fees to consider, which vary depending on the plan you choose. These fees are similar to the fees charged by Stripe, which powers Shopify Payments.
For instance:
- Starter: 5%
- Basic: 2.9% plus 30 cents per transaction
- Shopify: 2.6% plus 30 cents per transaction
- Advanced: 2.4% plus 30 cents per transaction
- Shopify Plus: 2.15%
The more revenue you make each month, the more you’ll potentially benefit from the discounts on higher Shopify plans.
Notably, Shopify also offers discounts on Shipping rates that increase based on your plan. The higher the cost of your plan, the higher your shipping discount will be.
Shopify Transaction Fees
Shopify Payments is an excellent tool for processing ecommerce fees, with decent credit card rates. However, you may prefer to use an external tool, such as Square or PayPal.
Integrating one of these tools with your Shopify plan will incur an additional cost.
This transaction fee is added on top of the credit card processing rate you’ll pay (which varies according to the provider you choose).
Once again, transaction fees vary based on your Shopify plan. For instance, the Shopify plus plan has the lowest transaction fees:
- Basic: 2%
- Shopify: 1%
- Advanced Shopify: 0.5%
- Shopify Plus: 0.15%
If, for instance, you were using PayPal to process payments, and you had the Basic Shopify plan, you’d pay 2% transaction fees, and 2.9% plus 30 cents for PayPal’s credit card rates.
This means for a purchase of $100, you’d pay $2 to Shopify, and $2.90 to PayPal, leading to a final payment of $95.10.
Additional Shopify Fees
Alongside the payment and transaction fees you pay with Shopify, there are also other costs to consider for some companies. For instance, if you want to access Shopify Expert support for coding assistance, there are costs to pay your expert.
Additionally, you’ll need to think about the cost of printing shipping labels and sending products to customers through tools like Shopify Shipping or Shopify Fulfillment.
Your shipping costs will vary based on the plan you choose, for instance, each plan has discounts to offer:
- Basic: Up to 64%
- Shopify: Up to 72%
- Advanced: Up to 74%
- Plus: Variable
Other costs you might need to consider when calculating Shopify fees include:
- Prices for add-ons and integrations: Some of the integrations on the Shopify app store charge a monthly fee for access. You can check the price on each app listing.
- Point of sale options: While Shopify POS Lite comes included with most Shopify plans, there’s an extra $89 per month to pay for POS Pro, unless you use Shopify Plus.
- Premium themes: If you want premium themes and templates for Shopify, you’ll pay a one-off cost to start using the theme on your site.
- Outsourcing: If you want to outsource things like shipping to Shopify, you’ll pay a fee to the Shopify Fulfillment Network. There may also be a fee if you use a dropshipping service.
- Domain names: If you want a unique domain name for your Shopify store, you’ll pay for that too. You can buy a domain through Shopify starting at around $14 per year for a .com domain.

FAQ
The price you’ll pay to use Shopify depends on your payment processor, chosen plan, and any add-ons you need. For instance, Basic Shopify will cost $39 per month with 2.9% plus 30 cents payment fees, and 2% transaction fees for external payment processors.
The fees for Shopify are calculated based on your transaction fees (for external payment processors), credit card costs, monthly plans, and any extras you choose to purchase. You can use our Shopify fees calculator for a quick insight into monthly costs.
There are a range of fees to consider when you start selling with Shopify, from monthly subscription fees, to credit card rates, payment processing fees, themes, apps, and domain name costs. However, it can be cheaper to sell with Shopify than some alternative solutions.
We recommend choosing an annual plan to get a discount, and using Shopify Payments as your payment processor. As your business grows, you can save money by upgrading to a premium plan with discounts on shipping and payment processing.
Wix can be cheaper than Shopify as the monthly plans are less expensive, and the payment processing fees aren’t an issue. However, Shopify can be the better value for money, particularly if you want to manage omnichannel sales and run an international store.
